UL 94 is the flammability language of the plastics industry. Whether a housing material can claim V-0, V-1, V-2, HB or a 5V rating is decided in a flame chamber like this one: a standardised burner applies a calibrated flame to a bar or plaque specimen and the afterflame, afterglow and dripping behaviour are observed against the limits in the standard. The Motis chamber (model UL94-X) covers the 50 W and 500 W flame tests in one enclosure.
How the UL 94 Horizontal Vertical Flame Chamber works
The specimen is mounted horizontally or vertically in the chamber and the burner flame - set to the power and geometry of the method - is applied for the specified time, once or twice as the method requires. Timing of afterflame and afterglow, whether drips ignite the cotton indicator below, and the burned length are recorded and compared with the classification table of UL 94 or the corresponding IEC/ISO method.
Key specifications
| Standards | UL 94; IEC 60695-11-10 (50 W), IEC 60695-11-20 (500 W); ASTM D635, D3801, D4804, D4986, D5048, D5207; ISO 1210, ISO 9772, ISO 9773; GB/T 2408 |

| Flame powers | 50 W and 500 W test flames in one chamber |
| Specimen arrangements | Horizontal burning, vertical burning and foam configurations as the methods require |
What the test reports
- Afterflame and afterglow times
- Dripping behaviour and cotton ignition
- Burned length / rate of burning
- Classification outcome against the standard's table (for example V-0, V-1, V-2, HB)
Applications
Compounding plants, electrical and electronic product manufacturers, and appliance laboratories use the UL 94 chamber daily, because a resin's UL 94 rating decides where it can be sold. It is usually the first flame instrument a plastics laboratory buys.
Frequently asked questions
Which standard should I order against?
Order against the standard your reports must cite. The instrument platform is shared across the listed standards, but fixtures, software templates and calibration routines differ, so name the standard (and its year) in your inquiry and the configuration will be matched to it.
Does the chamber include both 50 W and 500 W burners?
The UL94-X is specified for the 50 W and 500 W flame tests. Confirm the burner set and any methane/air supply requirements in your inquiry, since gas supply is arranged locally.
Can it test foams as well?
Foam ratings (HF-1, HF-2, HBF) use their own specimen arrangement under ISO 9772/9773 and UL 94. The standards are listed for this chamber family; name foam testing in your inquiry so the fixtures are included.
Configuration, installation and support
Every UL 94 Horizontal Vertical Flame Chamber is supplied as a configured system, not a bare instrument: the test chamber or frame, the burner or heater assemblies named in the method, the measurement chain and the control software with the report templates for UL 94, IEC 60695-11-10, IEC 60695-11-20, ISO 9772, ISO 9773. Before quotation we confirm the installation conditions with you - floor loading and ceiling height for large rigs, exhaust and extraction routes, gas and fuel services, and power supply - because a fire test instrument only produces defensible data when the room around it is right. Commissioning covers assembly, calibration of the measurement chain against the method's own checks, and training of your operators on running the test and maintaining the apparatus. Spare ignition parts, thermocouples and other consumables for the first period of operation can be included in the supply, and the instrument is supported with calibration and maintenance services after installation.
What to include in your inquiry
To quote the UL 94 Horizontal Vertical Flame Chamber correctly the first time, send: the standard and edition you will test to (UL 94, IEC 60695-11-10, IEC 60695-11-20, ISO 9772, ISO 9773); the materials or products you will test and their sizes; the configuration options you already know you need; and the destination laboratory's location and available services. If you are building a new fire laboratory rather than adding one instrument, say so - this apparatus is often planned together with the other instruments in its category, and a combined layout and exhaust plan is cheaper than three separate ones.
