Rule one: the standard chooses the instrument
Fire testing has almost no generic instruments. A specification that says "test to EN 13823" has already chosen the SBI; one that says "V-0 at 1.5 mm" has chosen a UL 94 chamber. So the first step is documentary: collect the exact standards (with editions) your reports must cite, from your customers' specifications, the regulations of your markets, or your accreditation scope. Every product page on this site is indexed by its standards for exactly this reason.
Rule two: specimen and scale
Within a standard family, scale follows specimen. Milligram specimens (new formulations) point to MCC; bench specimens to cone, oxygen index and flame chambers; full products and elements to SBI, tunnels and fire resistance furnaces. Buying one scale up "for the future" is usually a mistake in fire testing, because methods do not substitute for each other in a report.
Rule three: the room is part of the instrument
Large rigs live or die by their building: the SBI needs its exhaust capacity and gas supply, furnaces need fuel and extraction routes, tunnels need their length. Before quotation on any large instrument, survey the room - dimensions, ceiling height, exhaust path, gas and power services - and share it with the inquiry. Bench instruments are less demanding but still need extraction and, for flame tests, the gas supply the method defines.
Rule four: buy the data chain, not the box
What you will actually defend in an audit is the record: calibration of heat flux meters, gas analysers and balances against the method's own checks; software that computes the standard's indices and prints its report format; and operators trained on the method. Ask for the calibration routine, the report template and the training scope in the quotation, not as afterthoughts.
A short pre-inquiry checklist
- The standards and editions your reports must cite
- The products/materials and specimen sizes you will test
- Expected test volume per month (it decides automation level, e.g. COI vs AOI oxygen index)
- Laboratory room dimensions and services for anything larger than a bench instrument
- Accreditation plans (laboratory accreditation scopes are written around named methods)
Send the checklist answers with your inquiry through the contact page and the datasheet and quotation you receive will match the configuration you actually need.
