Battery fire & thermal runaway testing

Energy storage changed fire testing: the specimen now brings its own fuel and its own ignition source. This family covers the calorimetry and abuse instruments for cell, module and unit testing.

The anchor instrument is heat release calorimetry for UL 9540A, which measures what a failing cell or unit actually releases. Around it sit the abuse configurations in the wider range - thermal runaway initiation devices, pressure and abuse chambers (the AEC/EPT configurations) and the battery fire exposure test for ECE R100, where a complete battery is exposed to an external fuel fire. Tell us the test level you must run and we will map the set.

plan the test level first

UL 9540A is organised by level - cell, module, unit, installation - and the equipment differs by level. The battery sector page sets out how the levels connect, and the blog's thermal runaway methods overview explains the test logic.
