Smoke density & toxicity

Smoke obscures escape routes and carries the toxic gases that cause most fire casualties. These instruments measure how much smoke a material makes and what that smoke contains.

050100 HEAT FLUX kW/m²
ASTM E662Chamber method
IEC 61034Cable method
FTIRGas analysis

Two questions, two instrument families. How much smoke: the NBS chamber gives specific optical density for materials in transport and construction, while the 3-metre cube gives light transmission for cables. What is in the smoke: FTIR analysis quantifies the fire gases continuously, feeding the toxicity indices that railway and aviation methods require. Most smoke laboratories run a chamber and an FTIR interface together.

Which smoke number does your specification ask for?

Optical density (Ds) points to the NBS chamber; percentage light transmission points to the 3-metre cube; a toxicity index or gas list points to FTIR. If the specification names a standard, the instrument follows automatically - send the standard number with your inquiry.
