Construction: reaction-to-fire testing for EN 13501-1

Euroclass classification is an instrument chain. How the classes are assembled from tests, and the Motis equipment for each link.

Construction products in Europe are classified for reaction to fire under EN 13501-1, within the Construction Products Regulation. The classification is not one test but a defined set of tests per class, and equipping a laboratory means covering the set for the classes your customers need.

The instrument chain by class

Class E rests on the single flame source test (ISO 11925-2). Classes D, C and B add the SBI (EN 13823): FIGRA thresholds tighten as the class rises, with smoke (s) and droplet (d) additions from the same test. Class A2 adds either the non-combustibility furnace (ISO 1182) or the bomb calorimeter (ISO 1716) evidence, with strict SBI limits. Class A1 requires both ISO 1182 and ISO 1716 at their tightest criteria. Floorings take the same logic with the flooring radiant panel (ISO 9239-1) added for the fl classes, and roofs are classified separately under EN 13501-5 from ENV 1187 tests.

Equipping a construction fire laboratory

The working core is SBI + single flame source + one of the A-class instruments; the full set adds the second A-class instrument, the flooring panel and, for UK-facing work, the BS 476-6/-7 apparatus. All are in the building materials family. Plan the SBI room and its exhaust first - it is the installation that constrains the building.
